Book Review: Never Coming Home by Kate Williams

Unknown Island is the newest, hottest, and most exclusive luxury resort in the world—and the best kept secret. With a viral marketing campaign drawing attention to the descriptions of natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and world-class service everyone wants their chance to go. But the highly exclusive new resort is open by invitation only for the most influential 21-and-under crowd. Ten elite influencers have been selected as the first guests and the internet is buzzing with anticipation about who they are and why they were chosen. Among them are a beauty blogger, an heiress, an athlete, famous chef, a DJ, an environmental activist, an up-and-coming politician, a CEO, and a superstar. But they weren’t invited to the island for their social media presence—only for the secrets each of them harbors.

As the guests arrive on Unknown Island, they find that everything they thought about their destination was false. There are no luxury accommodations or staff, only danger lurking every step of the way. One by one the guests begin to die, and they slowly begin to unravel how they are all connected just as they each begin to suspect each other as being the killer. It’s soon clear that they may not make it off the island and that was someone’s plan all along.

Never Coming Homeis a fast-paced thriller that draws you into the action quickly and holds your attention throughout. My mind tumbled the entire time trying to figure out who was the threat and who was going to be next. I love the setting and how this remote island was complicit in everything that was happening to the characters (trapping them and preventing them from contact with the outside world). Kate Williams has done a fantastic job of making the reader feel the increasing and impending doom of their situation right along with the characters. Never Coming Home is very reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, but with a unique modern twist. I highly recommend it for your summer reading list.
